How to Speed up your Wi-Fi When Relying on Solar Power

If you aren’t getting the internet speeds that you are paying for then something needs to be done about this. All in all, the main reason why your speeds are suffering is probably down to the router itself. If you want to do something about this then you can find out everything you need to know, right here.

Bandwidth

In simple terms, bandwidth describes the volume of data that can be sent over an Internet connection in a given time. Let’s take two examples of how different online applications use bandwidth and the implications for the end user.

Streamed films or TV shows uses about 1GB of data per hour for each stream; for HD that figure trebles. Such high bandwidth requirement is due to size of files emanating from the server, which constitute the moving images. They are large because there is a large amount of data stored in each file. Also to avoid latency (another subject entirely) files require large amounts of instruction data for the Netflix player.

In contrast, casino games for example require much less bandwidth, somewhere in the region of 1/20th that required for streaming services, but it depends on the quality of the graphics etc. For example, if you’re playing poker or blackjack online from your own home, you’ll notice that the background hardly changes. With so much less bandwidth required as a result of reduced or minimal graphics manipulation and, by association, much smaller file sizes.

Optimise your Router

Testing the various settings on your router will help you to improve your signal strength and it will also boost the speeds in your home. At the end of the day, some routers also have entertainment settings, and this will prioritise bandwidth availability while video games are in play, or even while you stream content. This strategy is far less effective when you have various users who all share your Wi-Fi connection so try and turn off the entertainment settings instead. This is technical consideration but it is very easy to do. You just need to set the RTS threshold to a lower setting as this will improve your Wi-Fi connection overall.

Wi-Fi Channels

Another thing that you can do is try switching your router from a 2.4 GHz channel to one that is 5GHz. This will give you much better speeds. The main thing that you need to remember is that 2.4GHz only gives you 14 channels and these channels do tend to overlap. Choosing a channel on the 5GHz bandwidth could minimise the amount of other users on your frequency. Some routers are limited to the band however. If your router is limited then try and choose another channel if you can. This will give you less overlap, especially if your neighbours use a certain channel.

Buy another Router

Sure, you might not think that you have any energy to spare when it comes to your solar panels but if you have the power then you should certainly think about buying a better router. If you are able to do this then you will soon see that your speeds pick up in no time at all. A new router will give you somewhat better security features and it will also be compatible with even more devices too. On top of this, the additional help with your security will help you to really make sure that you are completely safe.

So speeding up your Wi-Fi connection is very easy to accomplish. If you want to get the best result then all you need to do is make a few simple changes. To make sure that you are not losing out on speed, you should contact your internet provider. When you do, they can advise you on anything you might need. They can also let you know if you are getting the speeds you are paying for as well.
